Tennessee Governor Says He Will Veto Bill That Allows Guns In Bars

Tennessee Gov. Phil Bredesen says he intends to veto a bill to allow state handgun permit holders to take their weapons into bars and other establishments serving alcohol. Legislative leaders are predicting an override, however.
Bredesen, a Democrat, plans to announce his decision at an afternoon news conference in Nashville. He’ll be joined by police chiefs and district attorneys. He made his intentions known in a letter to the state House speaker, the Knoxville News Sentinel writes.
The Associated Press and other outlets also report the governor’s intentions, citing unnamed sources.
A simple legislative majority in each chamber would override a veto. The bill (HB0962) easily passed both chambers this month — 66-23 in the House and 24-7 in the Senate. The measure bans gun-carriers from consuming alcohol where it is sold.
Nationwide, 37 states allow people to carry licensed guns into bars.
