Pizza shop owner shoots armed robber

In interviews, Abbondante said he told the robber to just empty the cash register and get out.

Williams, however, was adamant that the owner unlock that safe.

The safe – the one that Williams ordered Ferdinando Abbondante to open – contained just one item.

A 9 mm Berretta.

Stephens told me that the dead man’s weapon might have been a toy gun. The police had no comment, but Barnes noted that whether or not a weapon is real is usually immaterial.

Fear for your life is what matters in self-defense.

This is a textbook self defense shooting. The criminal knew the risks before he demanded money, but threatened someone’s life anyways.  In the heat of the moment, it is difficult to tell whether a weapon is real or fake, and the threat of death is still there for the victims. The owner tried to let the robber leave with the cash, but he demanded the safe which contained nothing but a handgun, and the owner did the right thing and used it. There is no telling what the robber would have done once he got his hands the loaded weapon.
